In such a small time, usage of internet has gone from near-invisibility
to near-ubiquity and the best thing about internet is that
t is not owned by anyone, everybody can use it.
The Internet encompasses an estimated 50,000 networks worldwide,
about half of which are in the United States. There are
over 5 million computers permanently attached to the Internet
[as of mid-1996 the number is between 10 and 15 million!],
plus at least that many portable and desktop systems which
are only intermittently online.
Internet operations are coordinated worldwide through the
Internet Engineering Planning Group (IEPG), an Internet
operational group intended to assist Internet Service Providers
to interoperate within the Global Internet.
Internet network security is significantly facilitated
by a number of Computer Emergency Response Teams (CERTs)
in eight countries and within a number of service provider
operations and private networks.
